“It’s Ashton. Robin, it’s me, Ashton.”
Spring is in the air. In Deep Creek Lake, the burst of blossoms on the trees has the effect of a starting pistol in the race to get the resort area ready in time for the seasonal residents return to Spencer, Maryland.
This year, the Spencer Inn, Mac Faraday’s five-star resort, has the added duty of preparing for the Diablo Ball, an annual benefit event that used to kick off Deep Creek Lake’s summer season. The exclusive gala has drawn in A-listers from across the country—including suspects and witnesses connected to Ashton Piedmont, a young woman who had disappeared while skinny dipping in Deep Creek Lake five years earlier—days after the last Diablo Ball.
Intrigued by a mysterious phone call from a young woman claiming to be Ashton, retired homicide detective Mac Faraday can’t resist diving head first into the cold case. But he’s not the only one. Someone behind the scenes has gone to a lot of trouble to bring Ashton Piedmont’s friends and enemies to the Diablo Ball—which promises to be a gala event to die for!

The Mac Farraday mysteries have turned out to be one of the gems I found sampling free cozy e-books for my kindle. I have been hooked ever since. The latest book, Open Season, was non-stop action from page one. Others have out lined the plot so I won't recap it too; I want to discuss the recurring cast that make this series / so much fun:Mac: the anchor with his wife Archie the heart of the series watching their relationship progress has been wonderful. Carr manages to develop her characters amidst exciting action.
David: Mac's half-brother and the police chief : has been a player whose sexy past may torpedo his romantic future.
Gnarly: Mac's German shepherd who is smarter and braver then most people. He was let go from the Army for undisclosed reasons. Mac wants to kill him half the time. If you haven't read Gnarly's Christmas novella it is so funny.
Open Season can stand alone as Christie-style Carr smartly gives a list of the cast and their roles at the beginning of each book, but I really recommend picking up all of these books and reading them in order. Carr has a knack for writing unique plots with a bit of romance and a recurring cast of characters that are likeable and interesting. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.

Open Season for Murder A Mac Faraday Mystery Book 10 edition by Lauren Carr Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
This is book #10 in the series and I've read them all. Waiting for number 11. Always a good mystery, always lots of interesting characters. And if you get bogged down in all of the characters you can always go back to the front of the book for a recap on each of them. I would recommend this series of books. And by the way, always a good price for them at .
I love the Mac Faraday series, and Open Season for Murder did not disappoint. Lauren Carr has created intriguing and relatable characters who seem like old friends. The plotting is fast-paced and keeps your attention. With a perfect blend of suspense and humor, the Mac Faraday series continues to impress me with each new episode. I highly recommend this series.
More than just a simple cold case, this story is intricately plotted and generously populated with characters both likeable and not. The number of characters is overkill (pardon the pun) for me, but the story did not stall despite all the people involved.
Another hit for Lauren Carr. Just love Mac and all the things his life evolves into. As always there is a full cast of regulars who try to help and give advice, needed or not. Story line is good and I didn't want to put it down.
If you like a quiet, placid town and characters, this is not the book. As always Lauren throws in a lot of curves.\\
Great story, highly recommended along with the entire Mac Farady series.
Love Lauren Carr's writing. Her stories are well designed and give great character detail. The stories keep you guessing up to the end most of the time, although she does give you good clues throughout. Story moves along without any dragging and she keeps you guessing and keeps your mind working. The romance is sweet and not over done romance without risque which is fun.
I have yet to come across a book in this series that I flat out didn't like, but this is the first one that was just okay for me. There were a lot of pieces moving around constantly, but not necessarily in a good way. There was one thing in the story that just didn't make sense if we are to believe Robin's stance on who is invited and who absolutely is not (so it bugged me- A LOT). I'm still invested enough in the series to see how the next book does, but this one fell a bit short for me.
I read all the Mac Faraday mysteries. This one was just as good as the previous six ((I think this was seven). The one thing that is consistent with Lauren Carr's books, or at least this series, is that you really do have to keep up with the characters or it can be very confusing There are a lot of players in her books. There are the usual, of course, but then there are always a few more added that forces you to concentrate. Nevertheless, it is good enough that I would recommend it to any mystery fan. It is also somewhat light in reading and not too dark.
